Is Political Cognition Like Riding a Bicycle? How Cognitive Neuroscience Can Inform Research on Political Thinking
نویسندگان
چکیده
Our understanding of political phenomena, including political attitudes and sophistication, can be enriched by incorporating the theories and tools of cognitive neuroscience— in particular, the cognitive neuroscience of nonconscious habitual cognition (akin to bicycle riding). From this perspective, different types of informational “building blocks” can be construed from which different types of political attitudes may arise. A reflectionreflexion model is presented that describes how these blocks combine to produce a given political attitude as a function of goals, primes, expertise, and inherent conflict in considerations relevant to the attitude. The ways in which neuroimaging methods can be used to test hypotheses of political cognition are reviewed.

Cognitive Neuroscience and Political Attitudes 1 IN PRESS, Political Psychology Is political cognition like riding a bicycle? How cognitive neuroscience can inform research on political thinking
This paper proposes that understanding of political phenomena including political attitudes and political sophistication can be enriched by incorporating the theories and tools of cognitive neuroscience. In particular, the cognitive neuroscience of nonconscious habitual cognition (akin to bicycle riding) and various memory systems are reviewed in order to describe the different types of informa...
متن کاملPolitical Neuroscience: The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship
The emergence of political neuroscience—an interdisciplinary venture involving political science, psychology, and cognitive neuroscience—has piqued the interests of scholars as well as the mass public. In this chapter, we review evidence pertaining to four areas of inquiry that have generated most of the research in political neuroscience to date: (1) racial prejudice and intergroup relations; ...
متن کاملHow do Narratives and Brains Mutually Influence each other ? Taking both the ‘ Neuroscientific Turn ’ and the ‘ Narrative Turn ’ in Explaining Bio
The observation that brains and political orders are interdependent is almost trivial. 1 Obviously, political orders require brain processes in order to emerge and to remain in place, as these processes enable action and cognition. Conversely, every since Aristotle coined man as “by nature a political animal” (Aristotle, Pol.: 1252a 3; cf. Eth. Nic.: 1097b 11), this also suggests that the polit...
متن کاملIdeology, motivated reasoning, and cognitive reflection
Decision scientists have identified various plausible sources of ideological polarization over climate change, gun violence, national security, and like issues that turn on empirical evidence. This paper describes a study of three of them: the predominance of heuristic-driven information processing by members of the public; ideologically motivated reasoning; and the cognitive-style correlates o...
متن کاملAlcohol and Cognition; From Neurotoxicity Prevention to Cognitive Rehabilitation
Alcohol provokes different molecular pathways contributing to a clinically significant neurotoxicity in different brain areas. Affected cognition in alcoholics can influence both daily life functioning and alcohol craving management abilities. Preventing alcohol-induced neurotoxicity with different neuroprotective pharmacological interventions is receiving strong scientific backgrounds from pub...
